Changeling
Dressable characters, merged into one mesh at runtime.
- Version
- 1.0
- Released
- September 2026

1 / 9
Changeling builds dressable characters at runtime: every equipped piece is merged into a single skinned mesh with a single texture atlas.
It ships three races, 133 parts, tints, morphs, save and load, and a complete Character Creator scene.
A dressed character is usually a pile of renderers and materials. Equip a helmet, a beard and a full set of armor, and Changeling merges every piece into one skinned mesh and one atlas. Swap a part, change a color or load a saved look: the character rebuilds in the background and swaps in when it is ready, without a hitch.
Three assets drive everything. A Race holds the skeleton, the slots it offers and the body underneath. A Part is one wearable piece. A Preset is a named outfit. Add the Changeling Avatar component, assign a Preset, press Play.
Start from your own characters: right-click a skinned character prefab and choose Race from Model to get a Race, a Preset and Parts sorted into folders. Validate All then names every issue, explains the fix and pings the asset.
What you get
One part per slot
A shirt hides the torso underneath it; take it off and the body comes straight back. Nothing is destroyed.
Mask Painter
Brush away body triangles that poke through tight clothing. They disappear only while that part is worn.
Tint channels
One color recolors everything painted into a channel, baked into the atlas, with a live preview while the picker is open.
Morphs
Height, head size, shoulders, belly, hands and feet sliders reshape the body without fighting your animations.
Save and load a look
One call returns the appearance as a small JSON; one call loads it back and reports exactly what it could not find.
Built to scale
Async atlas builds off the main thread, shared looks that cost almost nothing, and four atlas profiles: Hero, NPC, Crowd and Horde.
Addressables, optional
Mark content addressable and equip parts by id from bundles. Self-activating when the package is present.
Two scenes to learn from
A complete Character Creator built on the public API, and a Stress Test that puts build times, frame time, draw calls and memory on screen.
